　NHK 連続テレビ小説『らんまん』の劇中でリトグラフ版画手法が詳細に説明されていました。 槇野万太郎が、植物の生態説明を自身で描くために、リトグラフ版画工房に弟子入りし処方を習 い、植物図鑑の自費出版の為に、印刷機とドイツ産の石を購入、住まいの長屋を改造して版画工 房を自身で持つ過程が描かれました。

私自身も、1990年からニューヨークのザ・アート・スチューデント・リーグ・オブ・ニューヨー クにてリトグラフを習い万太郎と同じく制作の利便を追求し、プレス機を所有していないのにド イツ産の石を手に入れました。その後、インストラクターの紹介で最初のプレス機を購入し、ブ ルックリン区、DUMBO地区に自身のスタジオ持つことができました。最初のプレス機には 「NEW YORK」と刻印されていましたが、修理の際にインチではなくセンチメートルで製造され ていたことがわかり、ヨーロッパからの輸入であることがわかりました このプレス機は、万太郎 が手に入れた日本製のプレス機とほぼ同じ形でした。

2020年まで、私はこのスタジオで版画制作を続け、アメリカ、ヨーロッパ、日本で作品を発表し ました。またソシエティ・オブ・アメリカン・グラフィック・アーティストという米国の版画家の 団体の会員としても活動し、作品を発表し続けました。しかし、コロナで2年間スタジオが使用で きない時期と、高齢の実母のケアが重なり、2022年に音更町木野にスタジオを移すこととなりま した。

友人が『らんまん』を観て、リトグラフ制作の過程に興味を持ち、実際のドイツ産の石を見た いと言う要望があり、スタジオを訪れる機会がありました。このことから、リトグラフ技法が一 般の人々にも関心を持ってもらえることを知りました。今回の北海道ホテルでの展覧会では、新 作ではなく、37年間にわたるニューヨークでのリトグラフ製作の振り返り展示とともに、リトグ ラフのドイツ製の石や道具を紹介する展示も行います。

この機会を通じて、リトグラフ版画技法への理解を深めていただければ幸いです。

　In the NHK serial television drama "Ranman," the process of creating lithographic prints was detailed. Makino Mantaro, in his pursuit of illustrating the plant's ecology, became an apprentice at a lithographic print workshop. He learned the craft, purchased a printing press and German lithographic stones for the self-publishing of a botanical guidebook. The drama depicted how he transformed his residence into a printmaking studio.

　In my own life, starting from 1990, I also studied lithography at The Art Students League of New York, just like Mantaro, aiming to enhance the convenience of my creative process. Despite not owning a press, I acquired German lithographic stones. Subsequently, through an instructor's referral, I acquired my first printing press and established my studio in the DUMBO district of Brooklyn. Interestingly, the first press I acquired had "NEW YORK" engraved on it. However, during repairs, it was discovered that it was manufactured in centimeters, not inches, indicating its European origin. This press closely resembled the Japanese-made press that Mantaro acquired.

　Until 2020, I continued my printmaking in this studio, presenting my works in the United States, Europe, and Japan. Additionally, I remained active as a member of the Society of American Graphic Artists, an American printmakers' organization, consistently showcasing my creations. However, due to a period of two years when the studio couldn't be used because of the pandemic and the responsibilities of caring for my elderly mother, I relocated my studio to Konmachi, Kino in 2022.

　A friend who watched "Ranman" expressed curiosity about the lithographic process and wished to see actual German lithographic stones. This prompted a visit to my studio. From this experience, I realized that lithography could pique the interest of the general public. In this exhibition at the Hokkaido Hotel, alongside a retrospective display of my lithographic work spanning 37 years in New York, I will also showcase German lithographic stones and tools.

Through this opportunity, I hope to foster a deeper understanding of the art of lithographic printmaking.
